Although he has done his best to argue for leniency, he sees the all too familiar chain of events beginning. Today, he is defending a disadvantaged young man charged with the possession of a gun and a small amount of marijuana. As a public defender, he is frequently tasked with representing African Americans who have been accused of a crime. Locking Up Our Own, Foreman's first book, has become a Washington Post bestseller. A graduate of York Law School, he worked as a public defender before returning to his alma matter to teach. Foreman is an authority on criminal justice and cultural issues. By focusing on key areas in America's recent history, Foreman seeks to understand why African American leaders in positions of power supported the increasing incarceration and harsher sentences of masses of black Americans. Published in 2017, Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America is a political nonfiction book by James Foreman, Jr.
